Estimate your ideal body weight from your height and sex using the widely used Devine formula.
The Ideal Body Weight Calculator estimates a target weight from your height and sex using the widely used Devine formula. It gives a single reference figure, not a diagnosis.
What is the Ideal Body Weight formula?
The Devine formula is one of the most widely used methods to estimate ideal body weight (IBW) in clinical and fitness settings. Developed by Dr. Gerald Devine in 1974 this formula provides a quick estimation based primarily on height and sex. While not perfect for all body types it serves as a useful general guideline for healthy weight ranges.
The formula works by establishing a baseline weight and adding a fixed amount for each inch over 5 feet (60 inches). Men start with 50 kg and women with 45.5 kg then add 2.3 kg per inch of height above 60 inches. The result is given in kilograms and converted to pounds for convenience. This simple calculation makes it easy to use without specialized equipment.
It is important to remember that ideal weight is just one metric and may not reflect individual variations in muscle mass bone density and body composition. Athletes and individuals with higher muscle mass may have a higher weight while still being healthy. Always consult a healthcare professional for personalized weight and health advice rather than relying solely on formula estimates.
